Nord Stage 3 88 Review: The Previous Flagship, Still Listed

The Nord Stage 3 88 was the flagship before the Stage 4: two OLED displays, a piano section with 2 GB memory and 120-voice polyphony, C2D organ simulations with two pipe organs, the Nord Lead A1 synth engine with sample playback and an enhanced effects section. This review covers what it still offers, what the listing confirms, and when it makes sense against the Stage 4.

Our Verdict

Research Score 88/100

The Nord Stage 3 88 makes sense only at a clear discount to the Stage 4, which the listing reviewed here does not show. It remains an excellent stage keyboard with the C2D organs, the Lead A1 synth and a lighter 41 pound chassis. The Stage 4 adds the Wave 2 synth with three layers, doubled memory and a triple-sensor keybed for the same money on this listing, so buy the newer model unless the Stage 3 is cheaper or its specific features are what you want.

Where the Stage 3 Stands

The Stage 3 was Nord's flagship from 2017 until the Stage 4 replaced it, and it remains listed. The listing confirms two OLED displays for on-stage clarity, seamless transitions between programs, extended split functionality with crossfade, a piano section with doubled 2 GB memory, 120-voice polyphony and piano filters, C2D B3 tonewheel and vintage transistor organ simulations plus two principal pipe organs, a synth section with the Nord Lead A1 engine and sample playback with its own OLED, and an effects section with a filter effect, extended morphing, an enhanced delay and separate reverb and compressor per slot. It gives 41 pounds; polyphony outside the piano section is not stated.

Keybed

The Stage 3 88 uses a fully weighted hammer-action keybed with a fast, smooth feel designed for players who move between piano, organ and synth. The Stage 4 moved to a triple-sensor keybed with improved repetition; the Stage 3's two-sensor keybed is still a capable stage action, lighter than the Kawai keybed in the Nord Grand 2.

Three Sections

The piano section's 2 GB memory holds a generous selection from the Nord Piano Library with 120-voice polyphony and the piano filters that shape tone. The C2D organ section models the B3 tonewheel organ with drawbars, Vox and Farfisa transistor organs and two pipe organs, with rotary and overdrive, and remains among the best organ simulations available. The synth section runs the Nord Lead A1 engine, with analog modeling, FM and sample playback, controlled from its own OLED.

The Stage 4 replaced the Lead A1 synth with the Wave 2 engine and three layers, doubled the sample memory again and added the triple-sensor keybed; those are the reasons to prefer the newer model.

Worth knowing: Seamless transitions let a program change on the Stage 3 while held notes continue to ring, which was a signature feature when it launched.

Connectivity

Four balanced outputs, a headphone jack, USB MIDI, 5-pin MIDI and pedal inputs cover stage use. There is no USB audio, which the Stage 4 adds, and no Bluetooth or speaker.

Build and Transport

At 41 pounds the Stage 3 88 is lighter than the Stage 4 88 and travels in the same style of flight case. A stand, pedals and case are separate purchases.

On Stage

The Stage 3's red panel, OLEDs and seamless transitions still make it an exceptionally fast instrument under lights, and its organ section replaces a separate clonewheel. Players who learned on a Stage 3 often prefer its Lead A1 synth to the Wave 2; that familiarity is a legitimate reason to buy one.

Stage 3 Against the Alternatives

Against the Nord Stage 4, the Stage 4 adds the Wave 2 synth with three layers, doubled memory, a triple-sensor keybed and USB audio; at equal prices it is the one to buy. Against the Roland V-STAGE 88, the Roland has modeled pianos, the PHA-50 action and Roland Cloud. Against the Nord Piano 6, the Piano 6 drops the organ and synth for a lower price.

Buy the Stage 3 at a discount or for its specific features; otherwise buy the Stage 4.

Setup and the Library

The Stage 3 ships with a music rest and power cable; pedals, a stand and a case are additions. The Nord Sound Manager loads pianos and samples from the Nord libraries into its 2 GB piano memory, and Nord continued to support the Stage 3 with library updates after the Stage 4 launched, which keeps a used or discounted Stage 3 current. Monitors or headphones are essential at home.

Who Should Buy the Stage 3

Players who find a Stage 3 at a real discount, players who prefer the Lead A1 synth and the Stage 3's OLED workflow, and anyone replacing a Stage 3 they already know. At equal prices the Stage 4 is the one to buy. Home pianists should look at consoles.

Who Keeps It

Stage 3 owners keep them for years because the library keeps the pianos current and the organs do not date. Used Stage 3s are common and well priced, which is the sensible way to buy one now.
