Comments About MANDRILL'S Recent
East Coast Tour

"...Mandrill was at the Birchmere while I was away on vacation, but fortunately they were also in nearby Annapolis this Monday at the Rams Head Tavern, and they jammed like they had never left the scene! Still gettin' it done! Mandrill stands ten strong, and with the four Wilson Brothers and some others from the original iteration and an outstanding selection of newer talent (notably on drum kit, lead guitar, and violin) they rocked all their hits in a breathless 90-minute set. Highlights included "Mandrill," "Fencewalk," "Children of the Sun," "Mango Meat," "House of Wood," "Get it All," and of course "Ape is High."

Carlos Wilson's voice and flute were in fine form, as were Lou Wilson on trumpet and vocals, Ricardo "Doc" Wilson on Trombone and vocals, and Wilfredo Wilson on congas and vocals. Admonitions by the venue that the audience refrain from dancing went appropriately unheeded (as if the audience had any choice once Mandrill started jamming)... I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a concert so much. World's greatest rock band: the Rolling Who?! The Grateful Duds?! They better reco'nize! Mandrill Rules!"

"As Mandrill approached the stage at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, it was like a celebration. The audience's energy was high. We were loud/raucous and full of anticipation -- and Mandrill didn't disappoint. The band was strong/fierce from opening jam to encore.

After 40 or so years, Mandrill is still a formidable band, strong, positive and soulful. You gotta wonder why no one new is doing music like that. It's as bright and deep and spiritual and joyful and moving as it ever was; it still holds up.

Any younguns out there reading this? M-A-N-D-R-I-L-L. Get their CDs. Go to a live performance. Study up!

Mandrill's music, always an organic amalgam of gospel, blues, doo-wop, R&B, jazz, fonk, reggae, calypso, that night also included a spoken-word paean to the Black woman that brought a well-received hip-hop infusion to their repertoire. Throughout the set, in addition to those raging, shining horns so emblematic of Mandrill's music, were the group's signature drum rhythms. That explosive, polyrhythmic energy shook the Ram's Head Tavern from its floor joists to the ceiling and brought the audience to its feet throughout the evening.

The rapport/love onstage among the group was palpable and particularly in evidence as the brothers huddled together to sing backup on "House of Wood." They could have been harmonizing on a late-night street corner in Philly back in the day instead of performing in a yuppie tavern in old-town Annapolis in 2008.

It was an amazing night. Watching Mandrill onstage, I couldn't help but marvel at just how -- after centuries in the New World -- essentially and fundamentally African we still.

And that's a beautiful thing. ;)

That night, the music of Mandrill was more than nostalgic; it was immediate. And healing. It was numinous.

And I loved every minute of it.

Thanks, Mandrill, for one hell of a performance.

Blessings.

And, please, come back soon!"

As friends and family pay tribute to Isaac Hayes, the Wilson Brothers, Lou, Ric, Carlos and Wilfredo wish to express our appreciation for him as a person as well as his contribution to the world.

We’ve had the opportunity to share the stage with Isaac on multiple occasions, most recently at the Miami Music Festival and he will be greatly missed. His spirit and his music will continue to influence generations to come. Isaac's legacy will live forever.

Sincerely,

Lou, Ric, Carlos and Wilfredo

“We Gotta Get It (Right This Time)” ©2007

The song “We Gotta Get It (Right This Time)” is a call by MANDRILL for all people of the world to “Come together as one with a healing agenda.” It will be included on the upcoming seventeenth MANDRILL album, a highly anticipated presentation that will be filled with the Funk, R&B, Latin, Rock and World music that is the signature of this legendary group.

The Panamanian born Wilson Brothers (Lou, Ric and Carlos) are the founding members of the group MANDRILL that originated in Brooklyn, New York. Subsequently joined by fourth brother, Wilfredo, they are now living in California and are featured on “We Gotta Get It (Right This Time)” on various instruments and vocals. The One Sun Lion Ra, son of Lou Wilson, offers a brilliant rap with a positive and powerful delivery. Spacey T, formerly with Fishbone and mentored by the late great Eddie Hazel of Parliament-Funkadelic fame, is a special guest on lead and bass guitars. Wendisue, background vocalist for INXS, is beautifully showcased. The participation of the Children’s Choir of The Agape International Spiritual Center highlights the need for communication with and education of our younger generation.

MANDRILL has a long history (from their very first album in 1970 to the present) of humanitarian and environmental consciousness. The Group is actively involved in a campaign that focuses on the preservation of our rainforests and the plight of its namesake, the mandrill (West African baboon), which has been classified as an endangered species. MANDRILL celebrates their partnership with Bob & Mike Davis and Soul Patrol who are dedicated to the preservation of R&B, Urban, Jazz and Blues and the health and well-being of artists and community on a global scale. (http://www.soul-patrol.com)

They also support the Kobe International Harmony-Eyes Association (NPO), a 'Peace and Harmony' project that aims to overcome issues of race, politics and religion, through the efforts of all the people of the world, finding the splendor of the human spirit and it's endless possibility and potential.  (http://www.harmony-eyes.jp/index_e.html)

WE GOTTA GET IT
GOTTA GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME…

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE WE’RE HEADING
CLIMATE CHANGES
GLOBAL WARMING SPREADING
EARTH QUAKING
JAH’S HEAD SHAKING IN DISAPPROVAL
TSUNAMI RISING
HURRICANE KATRINA
BAPTIZING A NATION
WHERE IS YOUR BROTHER
WHERE IS YOUR SISTER
DID THEY HAVE A MEAL TODAY
DID THE CHILDREN SLIP INTO SEXUAL SLAVERY
LORD HELP US
‘CAUSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE A PLACE TO STAY

WE GOTTA GET IT
GOTTA GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME…

WE HAVE SEEN THE WORLD IN ITS GLORY
BEEN BATHED BY PURE SUNLIGHT
NO OZONE DEPLETION
WHEN RIGHT WAS RIGHT
NOW WE SEE WHALES, FISH AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL
CREATURES OF THE SEA
DYING A SLOW AND HORRIBLE DEATH
WASHED UP ON OUR SHORES
DEAD AND STINKING
BODIES DISPLAYING TELLTALE NASTY SORES
FROM THE LIFELESS CESSPOOLS
THEY’VE BEEN FORCED TO LIVE IN
TEENAGERS DROWNING
IN LIFE MADE TOO HARD AND NOT SOFT
SO MANY WERE LAST HEARD SCREAMING
“STOP THE WORLD I WANNA GET OFF”

WE GOTTA GET IT
GOTTA GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME…

AIDS, SUFFERING, VIOLENCE AND STARVATION
PLAGUING THE PRECIOUS PEOPLE OF OUR PLANET
WE WILL EITHER COME TOGETHER
AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS WITH A HEALING AGENDA OR
PERISH AS FOOLS
GLOBAL HEALING
INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL WISDOM
DHARMA
THE UNIVERSAL REMEDY
GO DEEP WITHIN
DISCOVERING ONE’S SELF
SEEING THINGS AS THEY REALLY ARE
VIPASSANA…VIPASSANA
THERE IS ONE WORLD
THIS IS OUR WORLD
WE HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE
TO MAKING IT BETTER
WE ALL CAN SHARE IN ITS ABUNDANCE AND
TRUE GLORY
NOW AND WITH OUR SEVENTH GENERATION FOREVER…

WE GOTTA GET IT
GOTTA GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME…

MANDRILL ROCKS THE CARTER BARRON AMPHITHEATER
August 20, 2005

MANDRILL appeared at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Washington, D.C. where their vibrant energy and sensual beats combined to create an extraordinary live performance that had the audience dancing in the aisles.

The Carter Barron performance also showcased the second generation of Wilson musicians with the advent of The Drill Collective (TDC) featuring The One Sun Lion Ra. He and the other new young artists of TDC are sure to establish themselves as the next generation of phenomenal musicians and performers. The presentations have in common powerful and positive messages and will span the spectrum from music, spoken word and poetry, to the visual domain. Look for the One Sun Lion Ra's CD coming soon.

Below, is a description, by Mandrill fan, A. Dunning of the show:

"Greetings,

I had the exceptional pleasure of seeing Mandrill perform this past Saturday at the Carter Barron in D.C. To say I was blown away by the performance would be an understatement. Mandrill was always a favorite of mine and all of the musicians I played with back in the day. To see them performing in 2005 with every bit of the power, precision and musical virtuosity we were accustomed to back then was truly awe inspiring. The addition of the baritone sax/ violin, harmonica player really gives a big boost to an already powerful horn section. The keyboard player played with energy and accuracy in reproducing the B-3 and clavinet parts. The guitar player laid down all of his parts and solos with skill and tone that would have done Omar proud. The bass player was solid in providing the foundation to the groove. I would love to see the bios for all of these current fine players added to the website. As much as Mandrill is a musician's band let us know what gear they use.

What can be said about the Wilson Brothers that hasn't already been said? I can only say that their pursuit of perfection in performance stood out brilliantly during the show. I have never witnessed a performer ask the audience if every instrument could be heard clearly after the show had begun. Fantastic job, Gentlemen, I commend you..

Mandrills got da FUNK!!!"

Sincerely,

A. Dunning

Civil Brand

Mandrill created an eclectic film score for the feature film Civil Brand, a Lion's Gate Entertainment (Monster's Ball, Fahrenheit 9/11) Production. Civil Brand is the riveting story of young Black Women fighting abuse and exploitation in the private prison system and features platinum-selling rappers Mos Def, Da' Brat, and MC Lyte. Mandrill's hit "Sunshine" from the compilation CD, "Sunshine: Love Songs" is featured in the movie. The Civil Brand score stands along with Mandrill's movie soundtracks for The Greatest (Columbia Pictures biopic of Muhammad Ali) and Paramount Pictures cult classic The Warriors.
